African Cultural Cooking Fun Continues: Somali Food

Yummy meals from our Somali chef! Here are this weeks' shopping lists:


November 19

  • ¼ cup vegetable oil (60 mL)

  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced

  • 3 cloves garlic, thinly sliced

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • salt, to taste

  • 1 vegetable stock cube

  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro (10 g), chopped

  • 1 tablespoon xawaash, xawaash

  • 2 cups basmati rice (400 g), soaked for at least 1 hour and drained

  • 2 ½ cups hot water (600 mL)

November 26

  • 1 medium Red onion diced

  • 1/2 Green Bell Pepper diced

  • 2 cloves garlic minced

  • 1/4 cup olive oil

  • 1 lb. beef cut into small cubes

  • 1 14 oz (0.53 kg) can Diced Tomatoes

  • 1 Tablespoon Tomato Paste

  • 1 Tablespoon Xawaash or to taste

  • 1 teaspoon Black pepper

  • 1 Tablespoon Cilantro, fresh chopped

  • 1 lime (juice of)

  • 1 Banana per person

  • 1 lb. spaghetti cooked al dente
